HOMEWORK JUNE 6-9, 2014 

PLEASE READ: 
This week you will have a listening test, a grammar test on noun clauses and reported speech as well as your FINAL writing exam. 

  WRITING:
Rewrite your last in class composition  Make sure you revise it for CONTENT, ORGANIZATION AND grammar.  Hand it in on Monday. You will not get your mark for the original composition until I check the rewrite. 

This means: 
  • adding details where they are necessary, or where I have asked questions,
  • moving time words, time clauses and other clauses to the front of the sentence. 
  • rewriting non-English sentences into English.
  • revising "and" sentences so that they show the real relationship between ideas ( i.e. time, adjective clause, cause effect etc)   
  • fixing the grammar mistakes. (Really look at your common mistakes - verb tenses, fragments, run-ons, word form etc and try to figure out why you made the mistake and what the rule is. 


COHERENCE:  Read both versions of the example paragraph on coherence./ Read the "bad paragraph" first.  What do you notice? Try to build more coherence in your own rewrite.

Have a safe and pleasant break, but don't forget that you should dome SOME homework every day, and not save it all up for Monday.

Writing:
    Rewrite your in class composition on "characteristics of a     good cashier, store manager, or flight attendant. Pay     
     attention to content  ( adding specific details and examples)  
  a well as to sentence structure and grammar.  

   Keep in mind that content counts for half your marks. If      there is no improvement to the content,  you are not learning or    improving and will continue to remain at the same level. Real    learning takes place when you analyze your first draft, revise   and improve  the content, analyze the grammar and structure mistakes,  and correct them in a 2nd rewrite.

Work on improving the content FIRST. Then,  correct the grammar,, rewrite, proofread as many times as possible. 

I will include  a composition on Characteristics of a Good Bus Driver written by a former Low Advanced student as an example.

Homework May 14th, 2014 
Reading:  
Writing: 
  • Prepare for in class narrative composition Thursday. 
  • Read the handout and example composition carefully. Read the composition out loud.  
  • Write out the main idea. 
  • Write what happened in point form. First, Second, Third,  Fourth etc. 
  • Note the conclusion - what did the writer learn from the experience. 
  • Read the composition again.  Circle all the time words, and phrases. Put brackets [  ] around all the adverb clauses.  Underline all the other clauses.  Note the transitions that are used. 
  •  Pay special attention to the fact that time clauses all go at the beginning of the sentence NOT at the end.  
  • Although grammar rules say it is okay to put them at the end of the sentence, writing and coherence rules say that they should go at the beginning of the sentence in order to help the reader follow the story's time line.  The writing rules are much more important than basic grammar rules.  In writing, your main purpose is to communicate - not to confused the reader. Coherence really matters.

  • Sentence Fragments (handout) . These are all errors from your own writing.  
  • Rewrite your paragraph on best places to meet a mate. 
  •  You will be writing your first in class composition on Thursday. 
  • Rewriting your last paragraph, correcting errors etc. will help you improve your writing. The real improvement in your writing , vocabulary and grammar comes in the analysis of the errors you make and the correction of those errors.

 Even though we have not studied Conditionals this term, the department's Advanced Grammar Final does include questions on conditionals, so make a point of reviewing some the rules - at least by practicing some conditional multiple choice tests.  

Also, there will be gerund/infinitive/ verb tense/ adverb clause/ noun clause/ reported speech/ adverb clause questions among others.

As you know, next week you have final exams.  Here are a few online practices for different exams. 

PRACTICE FOR LISTENING FINAL  
The final exam includes:  conversations ( dialogues), correct responses, announcements, weather, commercials,  two mini lectures and the CBC news.

 I will  add some some new practice for you  later, but make sure you  scroll down the HOMEWORK PAGE and do  any of the listening practices you have not done. Also go to the LISTENING PAGE and try some of the listening quizzes there. 

 Make sure you do some NEWS listening practice as there WILL be news questions on your final exam.
